In a variable-ratio schedule, the number of responses needed for a reward varies. This is the most powerful type of intermittent reinforcement schedule. A person walks into the casino and sits down at the slot machine. They have no idea how many coins they will have to play before they win. They just hope that one of the coins they play will win.
